Former Chelsea star Willian has admitted that leaving Stamford Bridge in 2020 was a decision he now regrets. The Brazilian winger, who also played for Arsenal and Fulham in the Premier League, revealed that his move to Arsenal did not go as planned and he wishes he had remained at Chelsea.

Willian spent seven successful years at Chelsea, establishing himself as a key figure in the Blues’ attack. However, contract negotiations in 2020 saw the 32-year-old forward seeking a three-year extension, while Chelsea were only willing to offer two. Frustrated by the disagreement, Willian opted to join London rivals Arsenal.

His time at the Emirates, however, proved difficult. Despite earning Β£240,000 per week, Willian decided to terminate his contract two years early, resulting in a personal financial loss estimated at Β£20.5 million. The decision marked a low point in his Premier League journey and is one he now views as a misstep.

Following his departure from Arsenal, Willian returned to Brazil to join his boyhood club Corinthians, taking a significant pay cut of around 70%. After a season back in his home country, the forward later returned to the Premier League, continuing his career with the experience and resilience gained from his challenging spell in London.

Reflecting on his career, Willian has openly acknowledged that leaving Chelsea was a mistake. While he has enjoyed a long and successful professional journey, including multiple Premier League campaigns and international appearances for Brazil, he remains wistful about what might have been had he stayed at Stamford Bridge. His story serves as a reminder of how career decisions, even for elite players, can carry both professional and personal consequences
